In the trail of the Rákóczis…

The Hussit House, which now operates as a country house. A statue of Bible translator Gáspár Károlyi stands in the garden of the Christian Reformed Church, while the Gáspár Károlyi Museum and Bible exhibit is set up in the building of the old Christian Reformed school. The Pálffy Castle built in 1780 in Louis XVI style and which later was renovated in an eclectic style is located beside the townhall building. In the ourskirts of Gönc, on the western side of the upthrust of the Nagy-Amadé Hill the Amadé Castle Ruins from the end of the 13th century are located. Northwest from the castle hill you will find the ruins of the Pauline monestary Gothic Catholic Church founded in 1371.

A Romanesque church was built here in the 13th century which Gothic expanded with a Gothic nave in the 14th century, all of which was later rebuilt in the Baroque era, although Christian Reformed church preserved its former building styles.

Telkibánya was one of the centers of 14th – 15th century precious metal mining, the 5th among medieval minig cities in Europe and earned in mining city title due to its silver and gold mines. Relics of the mineral mines of the Zemplén Mountains and collections of the minerals of the Zemplén and the Tokaj mountains can be viewed in the Abaúj Museum. Outstanding The Ore and Mineral Mining Industry History Collection is outstanding among them.

The city section located along the Slovakian border represents the meeting point of three regions: the Bodrogköz, the Hegyköz and the Hegyalja. Its reputation is earned mostly for its resident Ferenc Kazinczy poet who renamed the village Széphalom, till then known as Kisbánya. The language reformer poet’s memory is honored by the Mausoleum in the former orchard and by his tomb. Moreover, the Museum of the Hungarian Langauge opened its doors herein 2008, which is called to carry on the work of this great Hungarian while preserving our treasure, our mother tongue. The house of Lajos Kossuth’s parents can be found in Sátoraljaújhely, the old and the new Jewish cemeteries, and the tomb of Moses Teitelbaum miracle-working rabbi.

The Rákóczi Castle located on the shore of the Bodrogköz was built in Late-Renaissance style and later became center of the royal n the middle of the 1500’s, was built in late-Renaissance style, which became the center of the Rákóczi principality due to the marriagee of György Rákóczi I and Zsuzsanna Lorántffy. The Rákóczi Museum of the Hungarian National Museum, the most important Rákóczi cultura center, is located here. The Great Library is housed in the Sárospatak Christian Reformed College, whose green room will impress its visitors with its impressive design by Mihály Pollack assembly hall still impresses impressive design: the star patterned floor, the majestic Doric columns supporting the galleries, frescoes, as well the storage scaffold, like it was designed by the Pollack raktárállványzat. The 30,000 volumes of the old library is kep there, mostly with elaborately decorated vellum-bound mastefully crafted books that can be found virtually in the same condition as when placed on the shelves in 1834.
